Drug Addiction Therapist

Support That Meets You With Respect and Care

Substance use is often a response to pain, stress, or disconnection, not a personal failure. As an experienced addiction therapist, I offer compassionate, non-judgmental support for anyone looking to explore their relationship with alcohol or drugs.

Whether you’re ready to make a change, feeling unsure, or somewhere in between, online addiction counselling gives you a safe place to start unpacking the “why” behind it all without pressure, guilt, or stigma.

Understanding Substance Use

Substance use can be complex. It may be a way to cope, to escape, or to get through the day but over time, it can create more pain than it relieves. You might find yourself stuck in patterns you didn’t intend, or unsure of what life looks like without it.

Whether you’re navigating alcohol use, drug use, or both, addiction counselling can help you understand what’s driving the cycle, so we can start to shift it, together. There’s no one right way to recover. There’s just your way, and I’m here to support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a Question?

How to help someone with drug and alcohol problems?

Encourage open conversations, offer support while maintaining one’s own boundaries, and suggest professional substance use counselling when they’re ready. Therapists can help them take the first steps toward their personal healing path.

How to deal with a drug-addicted person?

It’s important to take care of yourself and set clear boundaries.  You can try encouraging them to seek counseling or other forms of support, but recovery is a personal choice. Educating yourself about substance use, seeking support, and maintaining your own well-being can also make a difference.

How does addiction therapy work?

Addiction counselling helps individuals understand and manage cravings, address underlying emotional challenges, and create healthier habits. Therapy can also help individuals recognize patterns that contribute to addiction, their triggers, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and work toward their personal goals of recovery. Different approaches, such as Mindfulness, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and relapse prevention planning are used based on the person’s needs. I work from a harm reduction model, which means I let the client decide their goal for recovery.

How does counselling help with alcohol addiction?

Counselling for alcohol use provides support in understanding the roots of dependency, managing urges, and building more sustainable habits. Through therapy, individuals can explore emotional factors that influence their drinking, identify triggers, and develop personalized coping strategies. Depending on each person’s needs, I may draw on approaches like Mindfulness, Internal Family Systems (IFS), or relapse prevention planning. I practice from a harm reduction perspective, supporting clients in defining their own recovery goals—whether that’s moderation or abstinence.

What does a drug counsellor do?

A drug addiction therapist helps individuals struggling with substance use by supporting them to explore what caused their underlying issues. Therapists can support someone to develop new coping strategies and work with clients to understand their  triggers, and take back control.

What therapy is most effective for addiction?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are commonly used in substance abuse counselling. I see substance use/alcohol use as a trauma response, so I bring a Trauma Informed lens to all my sessions when exploring one’s substance use/alcohol concerns. The most effective therapy depends on the individual’s specific needs and circumstances.
